It Didn't Have To Be This Way

Hard decisions...
If you think you know me,
You’d be wrong.
I’ve been changing
For so long.
You’ve settled in
To your perspective.
My mind’s moved on,
Found new directives.
Familiar chains
We shared a bond.
Served us both
Together strong.
The cuffs began
To itch and chaff.
You reasoned that
At least we’re safe.
So many times,
I saw that light.
Each step closer
Our chains grew tight.
Hopes and dreams
They’re calling me.
It’s a trap,
We can’t be free.
I know we can
Walk out that door.
The key’s right there.
It’s on the floor.
It’s fine in here.
We’ll be okay.
I’ll keep you safe.
It’s the only way.
This used to be
Enough for me.
We can have more.
Can’t you see?
If you must go
You’re on your own.
I’ll stay right here
With seeds I’ve sewn.
If I stay
I won’t survive.
Now that I see
My dream’s alive.
Out there
The world’s a scary place,
But hope will win
If I keep pace.
Decision’s made
Go or stay…
It didn’t have to
be this way.
